Turnitin

Turnitin is an academic integrity tool that integrates with Canvas. When activated, it compares student submissions to a number of databases containing published academic material, material available on the web, such as Wikipedia, as well as anonymized student work from both UChicago and other universities. Once the submissions are analyzed, Turnitin presents a “similarity score,” with highlighted elements linked to similar or identical writing found elsewhere. From there, the instructors can assess whether the student’s work violates the Booth Honor Code. For more information on Turnitin, watch this recorded faculty information session led by a Turnitin consultant. Please note you will need to log in with your CNet ID to view the recording.

To effectively use Turnitin in your course, please consider the following steps:

  • Share your expectations for academic integrity
  • Communicate the use of Turnitin to your students via the syllabus. Below is boilerplate language that you can adapt to your course as needed:

To support the principles of academic honesty and transparency laid out in the Booth School of Business Honor Code, this course will be using a tool called Turnitin to compare student submissions to a variety of other published academic work, as well as previous student submissions and publicly available content on the web, such as Wikipedia. Additionally, an anonymized version of your submissions may be kept by Turnitin and the Booth School of Business to compare against future student work.

  • Follow these instructions to add Turnitin to your course and set up relevant assignments to automatically check student submissions. If this setup does not meet your needs, or if you are interested in another Turnitin feature besides similarity scores, contact the Booth ID team.
  • Test the tool your self and consider seting up a practice assignment to introduce it.
  • Provide instructions to students for submitting their assignments in Canvas.
  • Familiarize yourself with the Booth Honor Code and the school policies on academic dishonesty.
  • Use Turnitin similarity reports as a guide, not as proof.
  • Contact Booth ID if you or your students have any questions.
